Best Hikes in Westlake Austin: The Trails Eanes Locals Actually Walk

Every Tuesday morning at 9 AM, Albina and I meet at the Hill of Life.

And we hike.

No conference room.

No agenda.

No PowerPoint.

Just people, dogs, trees, conversation and one very legitimate hill.

It started as a simple way to get outside and bring people together, but it’s become one of my favorite examples of what I love about living in Westlake.

Because one of the best things about Eanes isn’t something you’ll find inside a house.

It’s what’s right outside of it.

Trails.

Greenbelt.

Limestone cliffs.

Lake Austin.

Creeks.

Huge trees.

And places where you can feel miles away from the city even though downtown Austin is remarkably close.

So if you’re searching for the best hikes in Westlake Austin or wondering what outdoor life is actually like in Eanes ISD, these are the places I’d start.

Quick Answer: What Are the Best Hikes Near Westlake Austin?

Some of our favorite hiking and walking spots in and around Westlake include:

Hill of Life for a real workout and our Tuesday morning community hike.

Barton Creek Greenbelt for classic Austin hiking, limestone and creek scenery.

Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve for a quieter protected nature experience right in Westlake.

Commons Ford Metropolitan Park for an easier walk combined with Lake Austin.

River Place Nature Trail when you want a serious workout.

Turkey Creek Trail for a shaded, dog-friendly trail that feels farther from the city.

And sometimes the best “hike” is simply walking through one of our own hilly Westlake neighborhoods.

1. Hill of Life: Our Tuesday Morning Hike

This one comes first because it’s personal.

Albina and I host our community hike at the Hill of Life every Tuesday morning at 9 AM.

If you’re local, come hike with us.

Seriously.

It’s casual.

You don’t need to be a client.

You don’t need to be buying or selling a house.

That’s not the point.

The point is community.

What Is the Hill of Life?

The Hill of Life is one of the best-known access points to the Barton Creek Greenbelt.

And the name is not ironic.

It’s steep.

The rocky grade makes it popular with hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers looking for more of a workout than a leisurely stroll.

But what I love is that the workout almost becomes secondary.

Once you’re down there, you’re surrounded by:

Limestone.

Trees.

Barton Creek.

Trails.

Birds.

Dogs.

People.

And depending on recent rainfall, water.

It feels like Austin.

Why We Hike It Every Tuesday

Real estate can become very screen-heavy.

Emails.

Contracts.

MLS.

Texts.

Calls.

More emails.

And Albina and I both believe strongly in creating community outside of transactions.

Walking changes the conversation.

You start talking about:

Kids.

Life.

Business.

Ideas.

What’s happening in the neighborhood.

What somebody is going through.

What somebody is excited about.

You actually get to know people.

That’s the part I love.

Tuesday at 9 AM

If you’re new to Westlake, this is actually a wonderful way to experience the area.

Come hike.

Meet people.

See the landscape.

Then go get coffee.

Our guide to the best coffee shops in Westlake Austin has plenty of ideas for that second part.

2. Barton Creek Greenbelt: The Austin Classic

The Hill of Life is part of something much larger.

The Barton Creek Greenbelt is one of Austin’s defining outdoor spaces, running through miles of limestone terrain, wooded trails and creek areas.

Depending on where you enter, your experience can be completely different.

You can:

Hike.

Trail run.

Mountain bike.

Climb.

Explore.

Or simply walk until you’ve had enough and turn around.

That’s one of the things I love about the Greenbelt.

You don’t have to turn it into an expedition.

Is There Always Water in Barton Creek?

No.

This is important for people moving here.

Barton Creek is highly dependent on rainfall and current conditions.

The beautiful swimming-hole photo you saw online may not look exactly like that when you arrive.

Welcome to Central Texas.

But even when the water isn’t flowing dramatically, the Greenbelt is still a beautiful place to hike.

3. Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve: The Quiet One

805 N. Capital of Texas Highway

Wild Basin is one of those places people drive past constantly without realizing what’s inside.

And that’s part of what makes it special.

The preserve protects more than 200 acres of Hill Country habitat and offers hiking trails through wooded terrain, limestone landscape and native vegetation.

It’s also an important conservation and research area associated with St. Edward’s University.

This is not the place I’d choose for:

Loud group workout.

Mountain biking.

Big social hike.

This is where I’d go when I want:

Quiet.

Nature.

Birds.

Thinking.

A slower morning.

Wild Basin Feels Surprisingly Removed

This is the part that always gets me.

You’re right near Capital of Texas Highway.

And then you’re on a trail.

Trees around you.

City disappears.

That’s Westlake in a nutshell.

Civilization is right there.

But nature keeps interrupting it.

4. Commons Ford Metropolitan Park: When You Want a Walk + Lake Austin

614 N. Commons Ford Road

I talk about Commons Ford constantly when discussing this part of Austin because it isn’t really just a hiking destination.

It’s a:

Walk.

Picnic.

Birding.

Lake.

Family.

Dog.

Sit-under-a-tree.

Bring-a-book.

Kind of place.

And that’s exactly why I love it.

Not Every Outdoor Day Needs to Be a Workout

This is important.

Sometimes you don’t need:

Elevation gain.

Heart-rate zone.

Performance metrics.

You just want to be outside.

Commons Ford sits along Lake Austin and includes trails, open space and waterfront.

It’s particularly useful for relocation buyers because it helps you understand the lifestyle on the western side of Eanes.

Our guide to living near Lake Austin goes deeper into what living around the water can actually mean.

5. River Place Nature Trail: When You Want to Earn It

If the Hill of Life isn’t enough for you, let’s talk about River Place.

The River Place Nature Trail system is northwest of Westlake, so this isn’t technically an Eanes hike.

But it’s close enough to be part of the broader West Austin outdoor rotation.

And it’s a workout.

Stairs.

Elevation.

More stairs.

Then some additional stairs just in case you were feeling confident.

This is the one for the person who says:

“I want an actual workout.”

Okay.

Here you go.

River Place Is Beautiful Too

The challenge gets most of the attention, but it’s also a genuinely beautiful Hill Country trail experience.

Wooded terrain.

Creek areas.

Elevation changes.

Views.

It’s a good reminder that Austin’s outdoor life isn’t limited to Lady Bird Lake.

6. Turkey Creek Trail: Shady, Natural and Dog-Friendly

Turkey Creek Trail is another favorite when you want something that feels more like:

We’re going into the woods.

It’s located in the Emma Long Metropolitan Park area and follows a creek through a shaded landscape.

It’s especially popular with dog owners.

The trail has a more natural, less manicured feel than an urban walking path.

That’s exactly the appeal.

7. Lake Hills Park: The Neighborhood Version

Now we’re getting hyperlocal.

Lake Hills Park is part of the Cuernavaca/Austin Lake Estates lifestyle.

This isn’t where I’m sending someone looking for a strenuous five-mile hike.

That’s not the point.

It’s where neighborhood life and outdoor life overlap.

Water.

Walking.

Swimming.

Community events.

Families.

Friends.

Neighbors.

It’s one of the reasons Cuernavaca feels different from many other parts of Eanes.

If you’re considering the neighborhood, read our Cuernavaca vs. Austin Lake Estates vs. Austin Lake Hills guide.

This Is the Kind of Outdoor Access That Changes Daily Life

There’s a difference between saying:

“Austin has great outdoor activities.”

And actually living somewhere where being outside becomes part of your normal week.

That’s the part relocation buyers need to understand.

You don’t necessarily schedule:

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE DAY.

You just go.

8. Your Own Westlake Neighborhood

I’m putting this on the list intentionally.

Some of my favorite walks aren’t trails.

They’re neighborhoods.

Westlake is hilly.

Really hilly in places.

And depending on where you live, a walk out your front door can be a legitimate workout.

It’s also one of the best ways to learn a neighborhood.

Walk it.

You’ll notice things you miss in the car.

Architecture.

Trees.

Topography.

Views.

Kids playing.

Dogs.

Construction.

Which streets feel social.

Which feel private.

Where people gather.

Where you’d actually want to live.

Walking a Neighborhood Is One of My Favorite Buyer Tools

I can tell you:

“This is a great street.”

But I’d rather have you walk it.

At 9 AM.

Or 5 PM.

Or Saturday afternoon.

Because buying a home isn’t simply choosing a structure.

You’re choosing everything surrounding it.

That’s why we talk so much about lifestyle in our Perfect Saturday in Westlake Austin guide.

Which Westlake Hike Should You Choose?

Here’s my completely unofficial guide.

What Should I Bring Hiking in Austin?

This sounds obvious until you’ve lived through an Austin August.

Bring:

Water.

More water than you think.

Sunscreen.

Hat.

Proper shoes.

Phone.

And depending on the trail and season, bug protection.

In hotter months, earlier is generally better.

Texas heat deserves respect.

What About Dogs?

Austin loves dogs.

But trail rules vary by location.

Check the current rules for the specific park or preserve before bringing your dog, particularly regarding leash requirements and protected areas.

And bring water for them too.

Can You Swim on Westlake-Area Hikes?

Sometimes, depending on the location and current conditions.

But don’t assume that every creek or body of water is appropriate for swimming.

Water levels and water quality can change, especially after weather events or during hot, dry periods.

Check current park and local advisories before getting in.

Are There Easy Hikes Near Westlake Austin?

Yes.

You do not have to do Hill of Life or River Place.

Commons Ford can provide a much gentler outdoor experience.

Wild Basin has multiple trail options.

Neighborhood walking can also be beautiful without turning your Saturday into an endurance event.

Choose the experience that matches your ability and current conditions.

Are There Good Hikes Near Eanes ISD?

Absolutely.

One of the advantages of living in Eanes is proximity to the Barton Creek Greenbelt, Wild Basin, Lake Austin, neighborhood parks and other Hill Country outdoor areas.

Exactly what’s closest depends on where you live within the district.

Is Westlake Austin Good for People Who Love the Outdoors?

I think this is one of Westlake’s strongest lifestyle attributes.

And strangely, it sometimes gets overshadowed by the schools.

People hear:

Eanes ISD.

They think:

Schools.

Of course.

But when you actually live here, you also experience:

Greenbelt.

Lake Austin.

Hills.

Trees.

Trails.

Parks.

Pools.

Outdoor entertaining.

And being able to reach much of central Austin without giving all of that up.

This Is Especially Important for People Moving From California

If you’re coming from California, one of the fears can be:

Am I going to lose access to nature?

Austin isn’t California.

It shouldn’t try to be.

But the Hill Country has its own beauty.

Limestone.

Live oaks.

Creeks.

Lake Austin.

Big sky.

Hill Country sunsets.

And a landscape that changes dramatically depending on rain and season.

The longer I’ve lived here, the more I’ve appreciated it on its own terms.

Hiking Is Also How Community Happens

This is really why our Tuesday hike matters to me.

Yes, it’s exercise.

But I could exercise by myself.

The point is:

People.

We work in real estate, but I don’t want every community interaction to begin with:

Are you thinking about buying or selling?

Sometimes I just want to say:

Want to go for a hike?

That is community.

And ironically, those are often the conversations where you learn the most about where you live.

Tuesday Morning at 9 AM

So here’s my invitation.

If you’re in Westlake:

Come hike with us.

If you’re new:

Come meet people.

If you’re considering moving here:

Come see what we’re talking about.

Albina and I meet Tuesday mornings at 9 AM at the Hill of Life.

No pitch.

No pressure.

Just a hill.

And fair warning:

It’s called the Hill of Life for a reason.

Then Get Coffee

Obviously.

Afterward, head toward Civil Goat, Trianon, Swedish Hill or wherever your morning takes you.

We put together a full local guide to Westlake coffee shops.

Because apparently we’re now responsible for your entire morning.

Before You Buy a House in Westlake, Take a Hike

I mean that literally.

If you’re considering moving to Eanes, don’t spend the entire weekend driving from listing to listing.

Get out of the car.

Walk.

Hike.

Sit by the water.

Get coffee.

Drive the neighborhoods.

Eat somewhere local.

See how your body feels here.

See how your family feels here.

See if you can imagine doing it again next Tuesday.

Because you’re not simply buying:

Square footage.

Bedrooms.

School district.

Pool.

Lot.

You’re choosing the landscape your life will happen inside.

And for me, one of the best parts of living in Westlake is that sometimes that landscape looks like:

A Tuesday morning.

9 AM.

Albina beside me.

A group of neighbors and friends.

And one very big hill.
