Why We Chose Westlake After Living and Traveling Around the World

For a while, our family had the unusual opportunity to ask a question most people don’t really get to ask:

If we could choose where we wanted to build our life, where would it be?

Before real estate, I was a CPA and financial analyst.

Then I became an entrepreneur and built seven yoga studios in Houston over the course of about ten years.

Eventually, I sold the business.

And after years of building and working and raising two young children, my husband and I did something completely different.

We traveled.

We took our children and saw the world.

And when you spend enough time experiencing different places, something interesting happens.

You start paying attention to what actually makes a place feel good.

Not just what looks beautiful on vacation.

But where you could imagine:

Raising your children.

Making friends.

Creating traditions.

Having people over.

Building a career.

Going through ordinary Tuesdays.

Growing older.

Living.

Eventually, our search brought us to Westlake Austin.

And more specifically, to Woodhaven.

That’s where we chose to put down roots.

Why Westlake?

People relocating to Austin often begin with the things that are easiest to Google.

Schools.

Home prices.

Distance to downtown.

Taxes.

Commute.

Those things matter. My former CPA brain would never tell you otherwise.

But they aren’t the entire reason we chose Westlake.

We chose it because the life worked.

Westlake Gave Us Something We Had Been Looking For

After traveling extensively, I realized I wanted both:

Connection and space.

I didn’t want to feel completely removed from Austin.

But I also didn’t want our everyday life to feel urban.

Westlake gave us access to the city while still giving us:

Trees.

Hills.

Neighborhoods.

Outdoor space.

Community.

Schools.

Friends nearby.

And room to breathe.

That combination was important to us.

And Then We Found Woodhaven

Woodhaven is home for us.

It’s one of those Westlake neighborhoods that may not be the first name someone relocating from Los Angeles or New York types into Google.

And that’s exactly why I think local knowledge matters.

Sometimes the place that’s right for you isn’t the neighborhood you’ve heard about.

It’s the one somebody who actually lives here says:

“You need to come see this.”

What Is It Like Living in Woodhaven?

For me, the best way to describe it isn’t with a list of amenities.

It’s with our actual life.

We’ve raised our children here.

We’ve had friends over.

We’ve built community here.

My children have gone through Eanes schools.

Our house has been a place for gatherings and even meditation.

My husband and I have our rituals.

One of my favorites is riding our matching Vespas to Perry’s for dinner.

Yes.

Matching Vespas.

That’s probably a much better description of our life than anything I could put in a neighborhood brochure.

This Is What I Mean by Choosing a Life

When I’m working with relocation buyers, I don’t only want to know:

How many bedrooms?

How many bathrooms?

What’s your budget?

I want to know:

What do you want your Tuesday to look like?

Where do you want to exercise?

Where do you want to have dinner?

Do you want neighbors dropping by?

Do you want land?

Do you want to walk somewhere?

Do you want the lake nearby?

Do your kids want friends around the corner?

How often are you going downtown?

Because those answers help me understand where you should actually look.

Our Westlake Is Very Local

We have our places.

We go to Neighborhood Vintner.

We love sitting upstairs at Sway and watching the sunset.

We have our routines.

Our friends.

Our community.

And after enough years, you stop experiencing a neighborhood as a collection of streets.

It becomes:

Your life.

That’s difficult to quantify.

But it’s incredibly important.

I Came to Westlake Through Wellness

I think my background in the wellness world also affects the way I see this area.

I spent years building yoga studios.

So I notice how a place supports the way people actually want to feel.

Can you get outside?

Can you move?

Can you find community?

Can you slow down?

Can you connect?

Westlake has a very active wellness culture.

Yoga.

Pilates.

Hiking.

Cycling.

Gyms.

Lake days.

Walking.

Outdoor living.

We’ve put together a guide to gyms, Pilates, yoga and wellness in Westlake for buyers who want to understand that part of everyday life here.

I Still Look at Westlake Like a CPA

This is where my two worlds collide.

I can love living here and still ask:

Does this purchase make financial sense?

Those aren’t opposing ideas.

They should happen together.

When I’m evaluating a house with a buyer, I’m thinking about:

Purchase price.

Taxes.

Insurance.

Maintenance.

Renovation.

Resale.

Lot.

Condition.

Long-term ownership.

And the opportunity cost of choosing one property over another.

That’s why I wrote our guide to the real cost of living in Westlake.

Because being able to buy a house doesn’t automatically mean you should buy it.

The Numbers Need to Support the Life

That’s probably the biggest lesson I’ve carried from finance into real estate.

I don’t want to use numbers to tell people how to live.

I want the numbers to make sure the life they’re choosing is sustainable.

That’s different.

Is Westlake Expensive?

Yes, Westlake is generally a higher-cost residential market within the Austin area.

But I think the more useful question is:

What are you receiving in exchange for that premium, and do those things matter to you?

For our family, they did.

For another family?

Maybe they don’t.

That’s why I don’t believe every person relocating to Austin should automatically live in Westlake.

Westlake Isn’t Right for Everyone

This is important.

If your dream is:

Walk out your door.

Coffee downstairs.

Restaurants everywhere.

Dense city energy.

Never drive.

Then I might show you other parts of Austin.

If your priorities include:

More residential space.

Eanes-area schools.

Proximity to central Austin.

Outdoor living.

Community.

Hills and trees.

Lake Austin nearby.

Then we should probably explore Westlake.

The job isn’t to convince you Westlake is best.

It’s to determine whether Westlake fits you.

Eanes ISD Was Part of Our Decision

Like many families, schools mattered to us.

But I always tell relocation buyers to be precise here.

“Westlake” is not a school assignment.

Neither is a ZIP code.

If Eanes ISD is important to your move, verify the specific property and current attendance information directly with the district.

Our Eanes ISD schools and neighborhoods guide is a useful starting point for understanding how the area fits together.

Your Children Change the Equation

This is something you understand differently once you’ve lived it.

You’re not just choosing a school.

You’re choosing:

Who lives nearby.

How far everyone drives.

Where friends gather.

How your children get around.

What happens after school.

What weekends feel like.

The community around the school can become a major part of family life.

Westlake Has Given Our Children Roots

This mattered to me especially after we had traveled so much.

Travel gives children perspective.

But roots give them something else.

Familiarity.

Community.

History.

The person at the grocery store who knows you.

The friend you’ve had for years.

The restaurant where they already know what you’re going to order.

I wanted both for my children.

A big world and a strong home base.

You Don’t Need to Give Up Austin to Live in Westlake

Relocation buyers sometimes imagine moving to Westlake means leaving Austin.

That’s not how our life feels.

We go into the city.

We eat out.

We experience Austin.

But then we come home.

That’s one of the things I value most.

You can participate in the energy of Austin without necessarily having it outside your bedroom window.

And You Can Be Surprisingly Close to Nature

Depending on where you live in the broader Eanes area, you can be close to:

Lake Austin.

Trails.

Parks.

Greenbelt access.

Hills.

Water.

Our Westlake hiking guide covers some of the places locals actually use.

And our Lake Austin lifestyle guide explains how the lake becomes part of life here even if you don’t own a waterfront house.

The Lake Wasn’t Something I Fully Understood Until We Lived Here

That’s true of a lot of Westlake.

You can look at a map.

You can look at listings.

You can watch videos.

But until you understand the rhythm of a place, you’re missing part of it.

The lake isn’t just:

Waterfront real estate.

It’s recreation.

It’s summer.

It’s friends.

It’s boats.

It’s paddleboards.

It’s the backdrop to living on this side of Austin.

Community Was the Surprise

I expected:

Beautiful homes.

Good schools.

Austin nearby.

I don’t think I fully expected how much community would matter.

And this is something all three of us at The Council talk about.

People show up here.

Our team sponsors and participates in local events because these aren’t abstract “marketing areas” to us.

They’re our neighborhoods.

We live here too.

That’s Also Why Natasha, Holly and I See Westlake Differently

We’re three Realtors.

But our brains don’t work the same way.

Natasha sees:

Architecture.

Design.

Potential.

How a house could be transformed.

Holly sees:

People.

Relationships.

Negotiation.

The hyperlocal details that can change a transaction.

I see:

Numbers.

Strategy.

Risk.

Long-term financial implications.

Put those perspectives together and you get a much more complete picture of a property.

That’s the idea behind The Council.

If You’re Moving From Houston

I understand the transition personally.

Houston gave me so much.

It’s where I built my businesses.

It’s a city I know deeply.

But Austin offered our family a different rhythm.

If you’re coming from Houston, you may notice differences in:

Topography.

Lot sizes.

Housing stock.

Traffic patterns.

Architecture.

Neighborhood scale.

Outdoor lifestyle.

And pricing.

Don’t assume your Houston real estate instincts translate perfectly to Westlake.

If You’re Moving From California or New York

The same applies.

Don’t try to find:

Los Angeles in Austin.

Or New York in Austin.

You won’t.

And I don’t think you should.

Instead ask:

What can my life become here that it couldn’t be there?

Maybe it’s:

More space.

A yard.

Pool.

Different pace.

Different community.

Schools.

Nature.

Lake.

Entrepreneurship.

Or simply a reset.

That’s the more interesting question.

Travel Taught Me Something About Home

This might be the biggest reason I wanted to write this article.

Seeing the world doesn’t necessarily make you want to keep moving.

Sometimes it does the opposite.

It teaches you what you want to come home to.

After enough airports, hotels, beautiful cities and unforgettable places, you begin to understand the difference between:

A place you love visiting.

And:

A place you want to belong.

For us, Westlake became the second one.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving to Westlake Austin

Why do families move to Westlake Austin?

Families consider Westlake for many different reasons, including proximity to central Austin, Eanes ISD, residential neighborhoods, outdoor recreation and the variety of homes and lots available throughout the area.

Is Westlake Austin a good place to relocate with children?

That depends on the needs of the individual family. Families considering Westlake often evaluate schools, commute, housing costs, neighborhood community, extracurricular activities and proximity to Austin before deciding.

Is Westlake Austin part of Austin?

“Westlake” is commonly used to describe a broader area west of central Austin. That area includes different municipalities, neighborhoods, ZIP codes and unincorporated or Austin-addressed areas, so buyers should verify the jurisdiction of a specific property rather than relying on the general label.

Is Westlake in Eanes ISD?

Many properties commonly described as Westlake are served by Eanes ISD, but buyers should verify current district boundaries and campus assignments for each specific address.

How far is Westlake from downtown Austin?

The answer varies significantly by exact property, destination, traffic and time of day. Some Westlake locations are relatively close to central Austin, while properties farther west can create a very different commute.

What is Woodhaven in Austin like?

Woodhaven is an established residential neighborhood in the Westlake area. Buyers considering it should evaluate the specific home, lot, school assignment, commute and neighborhood characteristics rather than relying only on broad Westlake comparisons.

Is Westlake Austin worth the price?

There isn’t a universal answer. Buyers should compare total ownership costs with the specific benefits they value, such as location, schools, community, lot characteristics and lifestyle.

What should relocation buyers do before choosing a Westlake neighborhood?

Spend time there without touring houses. Drive your actual commute. Visit local restaurants and coffee shops. Explore parks and recreation. Understand school boundaries if relevant. Then decide whether the everyday lifestyle fits you.

My Advice Before You Buy a House Here

Come live a day.

Not literally.

But almost.

Get coffee.

Drive the school route.

Walk the neighborhood.

Go to lunch.

Sit somewhere for an hour.

Drive downtown.

Come back at 5:30.

Have dinner.

We’ve even created a Perfect Saturday in Westlake guide to help relocation buyers experience the area rather than simply tour it.

Then ask yourself:

Can I see my life here?

Not:

Is this impressive?

Not:

Is this what everyone else says I should buy?

Not:

Is this the most house I can afford?

Just:

Can I see my life here?

Because after building businesses, raising children and traveling around the world, I’ve learned that there are many extraordinary places to visit.

But there are far fewer places where you want to put down roots.

For our family, Westlake became home.
